Narrative:

We were at FL290 near atlanta when ATC gave us a 40-60 degree turn for traffic. He said that he had an aircraft at our 12 O'clock position and he was not sure what his altitude was. The copilot began the turn and in the turn we got the TCASII warning. On the TCASII screen the offending aircraft was at our altitude and very close in. The RA required a 4000-6000 FPM rate of climb. I disconnected the autoplt and we initiated a climb. We climbed to FL310 and resolved the conflict. Later the watch supervisor at ZTL confirmed the offending traffic was at our altitude.
