Narrative:

Initially cleared via J-136 en route from geg to mem during the climb to FL290, and after passing mlp, we inadvertently intercepted J-36 outbound rather than J-136. ZLC questioned our route of flight, at which time we recognized the error which we had made, and immediately corrected and intercepted J-136. The first officer erroneously provided the outbound course to the captain, who was flying the aircraft. The captain did not immediately verify the outbound course for the airway, which he normally does. Additionally, the close proximity of the 2 airways, and the similar number designation (J-36 and J-136), along with reduced cockpit illumination during night operations, were contributing factors. Thanks again to ARTCC. We did question the controller as to any problems we may have caused, and he replied in the negative.

Title: A B727 CAPT WAS FLYING NEAR MLP AND RPTED THAT HIS FO PROVIDED THE WRONG OUTBOUND COURSE CAUSING HIM TO JOIN J-36 RATHER THAN THE ASSIGNED J-136.

Narrative: INITIALLY CLRED VIA J-136 ENRTE FROM GEG TO MEM DURING THE CLB TO FL290, AND AFTER PASSING MLP, WE INADVERTENTLY INTERCEPTED J-36 OUTBOUND RATHER THAN J-136. ZLC QUESTIONED OUR RTE OF FLT, AT WHICH TIME WE RECOGNIZED THE ERROR WHICH WE HAD MADE, AND IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED AND INTERCEPTED J-136. THE FO ERRONEOUSLY PROVIDED THE OUTBOUND COURSE TO THE CAPT, WHO WAS FLYING THE ACFT. THE CAPT DID NOT IMMEDIATELY VERIFY THE OUTBOUND COURSE FOR THE AIRWAY, WHICH HE NORMALLY DOES. ADDITIONALLY, THE CLOSE PROX OF THE 2 AIRWAYS, AND THE SIMILAR NUMBER DESIGNATION (J-36 AND J-136), ALONG WITH REDUCED COCKPIT ILLUMINATION DURING NIGHT OPS, WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. THANKS AGAIN TO ARTCC. WE DID QUESTION THE CTLR AS TO ANY PROBS WE MAY HAVE CAUSED, AND HE REPLIED IN THE NEGATIVE.
