Narrative:

ZZZ is a maintenance base for air carrier. We picked up aircraft xyz early in the morning. It had 4 MEL's on it. I carefully studied all MEL's and checked logbook and MEL guide for legality and expiration dates. All was legal and the 2 MEL regarding the cargo compartment had to be cleared that day. #1 MEL was: cargo compartment smoke detection system inoperative, and #2 MEL for: cargo compartment fire extinguisher system inoperative. Only restr was: no live animals in cargo hold (C2=class C compartment.) ramp personnel and flight attendant were briefed. We departed with 47 passenger and 1200 pounds of baggage/cargo. At 37000 ft, I started to realize how unsafe this scenario is, legal or not...it is unsafe.
