Narrative:

We departed orh at XA10 with the airport control tower closed. My first officer picked up our clearance from bdl departure. In the clearance, apparently the bdl controller gave us a hold for release on the ground, which the first officer did not recall hearing, and did not relate to me. Upon climbing out and contacting departure, the controller asked us who released us. My reply was that we were not aware of the hold for release clearance. No conflicts or any other problems arose because of this. It was VFR. Contributing factors: 1) new first officer, 2) first flight of the day, 3) closed control tower, 4) conducting runup, 5) pilot controled lighting. With all of the above factors, my workload was well above normal. My company has a push on for first flight of the day to be on schedule. I called bdl approach at our destination to talk about this. They said, 'don't worry about it, you're clean.' next time high workload, slow down and doublechk everything!

Title: FLC IN DHC8 DEPARTED ORH ARPT IFR WITHOUT RECEIVING A RELEASE FROM DEP CTL.

Narrative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
