Narrative:

While on the lzard 1 arrival to tpa we missed the turn to 180 degrees at tumpy intersection. We discovered this when tpa approach pointed it out then gave us a turn to 170 degrees. We continued to runway 36L with a visual approach. Several factors contributed to missing the turn. The lzard arrival is new and this was only the second time I have used it. The first was the day before. That day we were using runway 18R which uses vectors prior to tumpy intersection. As the WX was clear and we were looking at the airport I was preloaded for a vector for a visual. The approach plate is unusual in its depiction. The way it is laid out visually makes it look like the turn is directly north of the airport (it is actually several mi prior). The radial 039 degrees past tumpy inbound to pie is drawn with heavy dark inbound route line even though this section is not ever used as a course to be flown. In most other stars, inbound courses with a turn have a very light thin line indicating radial used after turn is not part of route to be flown. Examples: jhawk 3 to mci, tyger 4 to mci, decee 3 to ind, are but a few. In my opinion this is a poorly drawn arrival, even with the text notes it is very misleading. I think the arrival needs to be redrawn. As for myself I will be sure to read notes carefully and compare them to depictions so this won't catch me again.

Title: MD80 CREW HAD TRACK DEV ON THE LZARD ONE AT TPA.

Narrative: WHILE ON THE LZARD 1 ARR TO TPA WE MISSED THE TURN TO 180 DEGS AT TUMPY INTXN. WE DISCOVERED THIS WHEN TPA APCH POINTED IT OUT THEN GAVE US A TURN TO 170 DEGS. WE CONTINUED TO RWY 36L WITH A VISUAL APCH. SEVERAL FACTORS CONTRIBUTED TO MISSING THE TURN. THE LZARD ARR IS NEW AND THIS WAS ONLY THE SECOND TIME I HAVE USED IT. THE FIRST WAS THE DAY BEFORE. THAT DAY WE WERE USING RWY 18R WHICH USES VECTORS PRIOR TO TUMPY INTXN. AS THE WX WAS CLR AND WE WERE LOOKING AT THE ARPT I WAS PRELOADED FOR A VECTOR FOR A VISUAL. THE APCH PLATE IS UNUSUAL IN ITS DEPICTION. THE WAY IT IS LAID OUT VISUALLY MAKES IT LOOK LIKE THE TURN IS DIRECTLY N OF THE ARPT (IT IS ACTUALLY SEVERAL MI PRIOR). THE RADIAL 039 DEGS PAST TUMPY INBOUND TO PIE IS DRAWN WITH HVY DARK INBOUND RTE LINE EVEN THOUGH THIS SECTION IS NOT EVER USED AS A COURSE TO BE FLOWN. IN MOST OTHER STARS, INBOUND COURSES WITH A TURN HAVE A VERY LIGHT THIN LINE INDICATING RADIAL USED AFTER TURN IS NOT PART OF RTE TO BE FLOWN. EXAMPLES: JHAWK 3 TO MCI, TYGER 4 TO MCI, DECEE 3 TO IND, ARE BUT A FEW. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A POORLY DRAWN ARR, EVEN WITH THE TEXT NOTES IT IS VERY MISLEADING. I THINK THE ARR NEEDS TO BE REDRAWN. AS FOR MYSELF I WILL BE SURE TO READ NOTES CAREFULLY AND COMPARE THEM TO DEPICTIONS SO THIS WON'T CATCH ME AGAIN.
