Narrative:

Pdz.PDZ3 arrival for lax is a STAR that feeds all 4 runways. Had been cleared on STAR and to descend per profile. Approaching arnes (our clearance limit not having been assigned a runway), first officer asked controller if we were cleared for approach. He said no, and to follow STAR. First officer led him on next transmission by asking, 'do you mean to fuelr and suzzi (for runway 25L)?' controller said yes, and issued altitude crossing restrs for intersection. Realized that operations were hectic due to a B757 that had shut down runway 25R, but we needed clearance that would have prevented an overshoot. Certain controller would have violated us if we automatically assumed runway 25L and he had intended to send us to runway 24R.
