Narrative:

Checked fuel level during normal preflight at osu. Appeared to have adequate fuel for intended operation. Lost power at 4500 ft. Radioed cmh approach, squawked 7700. Attempted to operate hand-held GPS. Landed in corn field -- no apparent damage to aircraft, no injuries. Corrective action: use fuel stick to measure fuel quantity. Don't trust fuel indicators. Get a better GPS (there were airports in the area). Use ATC for VFR flight following.
