Approaching leveloff altitude of 12000 ft, first officer hand flying, ATC issued a 'fly direct to' clearance. Captain and first officer both distraction with gfms inputs, causing a 400 ft altitude overshoot. Returned immediately to 12000 ft. No traffic conflicts.
