Narrative:

On aug/xa/99, I departed runway 19 in skagway on a charter flight to haines. I was following a flight of 4 cherokee 6's, so I decided to level off at 1500 ft, intending to stay below their cruise altitude. (Horizontal separation is difficult, if not impossible, due to the high density of VFR/uncontrolled traffic in a very narrow inlet -- outgoing traffic stays on east side, incoming on west side.) after the flight of 4 announced their takeoff on runway 19 on the CTAF, I never heard another call indicating their position or leveloff altitude. After the transition from climb to cruise, an aircraft came into my peripheral vision. It was ahead and off to the left. Due to the relative closure rate of our aircraft, I banked to the right and overtook the aircraft on the right. I also descended to 1000 ft to stay well clear of the other aircraft in the flight of 4 and continued the flight to hns.

Title: A PIPER NAVAJO HAD A NEAR MISS DEPARTING SGY.

Narrative: ON AUG/XA/99, I DEPARTED RWY 19 IN SKAGWAY ON A CHARTER FLT TO HAINES. I WAS FOLLOWING A FLT OF 4 CHEROKEE 6'S, SO I DECIDED TO LEVEL OFF AT 1500 FT, INTENDING TO STAY BELOW THEIR CRUISE ALT. (HORIZ SEPARATION IS DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, DUE TO THE HIGH DENSITY OF VFR/UNCTLED TFC IN A VERY NARROW INLET -- OUTGOING TFC STAYS ON E SIDE, INCOMING ON W SIDE.) AFTER THE FLT OF 4 ANNOUNCED THEIR TKOF ON RWY 19 ON THE CTAF, I NEVER HEARD ANOTHER CALL INDICATING THEIR POS OR LEVELOFF ALT. AFTER THE TRANSITION FROM CLB TO CRUISE, AN ACFT CAME INTO MY PERIPHERAL VISION. IT WAS AHEAD AND OFF TO THE L. DUE TO THE RELATIVE CLOSURE RATE OF OUR ACFT, I BANKED TO THE R AND OVERTOOK THE ACFT ON THE R. I ALSO DSNDED TO 1000 FT TO STAY WELL CLR OF THE OTHER ACFT IN THE FLT OF 4 AND CONTINUED THE FLT TO HNS.
