Narrative:

While deviating north around thunderstorms 1 controller gave us 'carte blanche' to deviate in any direction. We were handed off and, upon turning back south toward our original course, we were treated to a lecture from the new controller as to the wisdom of 'advising center when changing directions' so they don't run us into another aircraft. The easy fix is to communicate when there is the slightest doubt, realize that different controllers have different sits to deal with, and don't assume.
