Narrative:
Flying as a safety pilot for a friend completing his IFR training. ZDV requested a report passing czi. As we came up to czi, den became involved in a series of radio communications with other aircraft and my friend couldn't get his position call in until approximately 4 DME beyond czi. He made his position report as per the aim...'czi at 0000, 12000 ft.' ZDV came back with 'you crossed czi 8 mins ago!' and never listened to anything further from us. My friend's watch was 5 mins slow which resulted in the almost '8 mins' beyond czi where we were only about 2 1/2 to 3 mins past without a response to several previous calls that were either blocked or ignored. My friend is a fairly new pilot and didn't make any great effort to explain the apparent failure to report over czi. I attempted to explain the situation but ZDV simply ignored anything from our aircraft. I explained the need for accurate time to my friend but ATC could have been a bit less spring-loaded to jump all over us. 'What we have here is a failure to communicate.'

MY FRIEND IS A FAIRLY NEW PLT AND DIDN'T MAKE ANY GREAT EFFORT TO EXPLAIN THE APPARENT FAILURE TO RPT OVER CZI. I ATTEMPTED TO EXPLAIN THE SIT BUT ZDV SIMPLY IGNORED ANYTHING FROM OUR ACFT. I EXPLAINED THE NEED FOR ACCURATE TIME TO MY FRIEND BUT ATC COULD HAVE BEEN A BIT LESS SPRING-LOADED TO JUMP ALL OVER US. 'WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE.'
