Narrative:

Approaching cos, vectored over meadow lake airport where glider operations were reported by ATIS. I warned first officer to be alert for gliders due to prior sightings. Approach control was busy with other traffic -- 2 light aircraft in our area (1 landing and 1 crossing approach course runway 17L). I spotted a yellow sailplane at 12 O'clock position, less than 1 mi, and directed a left turn. First officer got a visual and started left turn. We missed him by approximately 1000 ft horizontal and less than 200 ft vertical. Approach had no radar target. I spoke with a supervisor at cos tower and he said this happens frequently. There should be an arrival published that does not overfly this airport.
