Narrative:
After takeoff dtw tower notified smoke coming out of left engine. Cockpit indicated 5 quarts (loss of 12 quarts of oil). Declared emergency and returned to land. (All other indications in cockpit normal, both engines running for entire flight.) normal landing/normal descent rates. Returned to gate with fire and rescue escort.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF DTW TWR NOTIFIED SMOKE COMING OUT OF L ENG. COCKPIT INDICATED 5 QUARTS (LOSS OF 12 QUARTS OF OIL). DECLARED EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND. (ALL OTHER INDICATIONS IN COCKPIT NORMAL, BOTH ENGS RUNNING FOR ENTIRE FLT.) NORMAL LNDG/NORMAL DSCNT RATES. RETURNED TO GATE WITH FIRE AND RESCUE ESCORT.
