Narrative:

First time flying air carrier operations. Taxi instructions were taxi to runway 9 via txwys K, west, south, and hold short of runway 4L. As we switched to tower frequency, tower asked, 'are you going to hold short of runway 4L?' at which time I realized that the nose of the aircraft was past a hold short bar. Some contributing factors: first time taxiing from this terminal. Instructions to hold short usually specify a taxiway to hold short on. When ground control gives taxi instructions they assume a high degree of familiarity with the airport.
