Narrative:

While on a dual IFR cross country from X21 to imm, student was given a descent to 5000 ft but continued the descent down to 4600 ft. ZMA controller said the mode C indicated 4600 ft and cleared the aircraft to expedite climb back to 5000 ft. Student climbed back to 5000 ft. The distraction was due to a discussion of the approach which was upcoming.

Title: INST RATED STUDENT OVERSHOT ALT ON DSCNT RESULTING IN ARTCC CTLR INTERVENTION TO REGAIN ALT ASSIGNED.

Narrative: WHILE ON A DUAL IFR XCOUNTRY FROM X21 TO IMM, STUDENT WAS GIVEN A DSCNT TO 5000 FT BUT CONTINUED THE DSCNT DOWN TO 4600 FT. ZMA CTLR SAID THE MODE C INDICATED 4600 FT AND CLRED THE ACFT TO EXPEDITE CLB BACK TO 5000 FT. STUDENT CLBED BACK TO 5000 FT. THE DISTR WAS DUE TO A DISCUSSION OF THE APCH WHICH WAS UPCOMING.
