Narrative:

Upon getting ATIS and personally calling for the proper rerte IFR flight was advised that either route was the same WX and would only give us the old route east. I really got the feeling that ATC just didn't want another aircraft to handle north of nyc and was 'palming' us off. We had a busy, bumpy, wet ride doing my best to avoid the chop. I realize that we didn't have to go, but I felt ok with the charter. I also feel quite dismayed that ATC could have delayed us -- worked us in -- on a much better route we worked so hard to get! It worked out, but still could have gone better.
