Narrative:

On arrival in lga, our gate was occupied. ATC instructed us to taxi to taxiway za from our turnoff. We held on taxiway za until the aircraft on our gate pushed back. Our marshaller marshalled us on to gate from our position on taxiway za. I did not follow his signals until I saw that the tow driver who was still hooked up to the A319 that just pushed off. The gate was also motioning to me to move forward. I then followed the marshaller's signals and parked at gate. I should have contacted ground before moving on to the gate. This was confirmed by a controller in lga tower whom I contacted after gate arrival by phone.
