Narrative:

On an IFR flight plan, the clearance given was not as filed and began with: direct to weard V106, intercept V374 cfb VOR, then flight plan route. Altitude clearance was to 5000 ft initially, to expect 8000 ft. While approaching weard by radar vectors, at between 4000 ft and 5000 ft, the controller gave additional instructions to intercept V106 to lhy VOR. While I was sorting out the discrepancy between the clearance route and the controller's instructions (lhy not in route), the 5000 ft altitude limit was exceeded. It was not until the controller instructed 'cleared to 6000 ft' that I noted the error. At that time the altitude was about 5600 ft.

Title: A PVT INST RATED PLT FLYING IN ZNY AIRSPACE BECAME DISTRACTED WITH A CONFLICT BTWN CLRNC AND THE RTE HE FILED RESULTING IN AN ALTDEV.

Narrative: ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, THE CLRNC GIVEN WAS NOT AS FILED AND BEGAN WITH: DIRECT TO WEARD V106, INTERCEPT V374 CFB VOR, THEN FLT PLAN RTE. ALT CLRNC WAS TO 5000 FT INITIALLY, TO EXPECT 8000 FT. WHILE APCHING WEARD BY RADAR VECTORS, AT BTWN 4000 FT AND 5000 FT, THE CTLR GAVE ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS TO INTERCEPT V106 TO LHY VOR. WHILE I WAS SORTING OUT THE DISCREPANCY BTWN THE CLRNC RTE AND THE CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS (LHY NOT IN RTE), THE 5000 FT ALT LIMIT WAS EXCEEDED. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE CTLR INSTRUCTED 'CLRED TO 6000 FT' THAT I NOTED THE ERROR. AT THAT TIME THE ALT WAS ABOUT 5600 FT.
