Narrative:

On approach to lax runway 24R, new first officer flying with less than 50 hours in seat, still on IOE, we were cleared for approach to runway 24R lax. After passing smo VOR on sadde six STAR we were on a vector 070 degrees heading for ILS runway 24. About 4 mi north of lax and 7 mi east of lax, we were given a heading of 220 degrees to intercept the runway 24R localizer. First officer overshot the localizer and did not use a 30 degree bank standard rate turn from 070 degree heading to 220 degree heading. I had to take control of aircraft and use a 45 degree bank to right to get back on a heading for runway 24R. ATC told us to use runway 24L and moved another aircraft to runway 24R that we cut in front of. First officer later told me that when he went visual, he was looking at runway 25R and thought it was runway 24R. The approach/runway light for the runways 25 appear to be brighter than the runways 24. We then landed the aircraft on runway 24L without incident. The TCASII did give us a TA warning at about the same time I took over control of the aircraft from the IOE first officer. We later had a thorough debrief about the flight and approach into lax.

Title: B747-100 FLC OVERSHOOTS LOC FOR RWY 24R AT LAX.

Narrative: ON APCH TO LAX RWY 24R, NEW FO FLYING WITH LESS THAN 50 HRS IN SEAT, STILL ON IOE, WE WERE CLRED FOR APCH TO RWY 24R LAX. AFTER PASSING SMO VOR ON SADDE SIX STAR WE WERE ON A VECTOR 070 DEGS HDG FOR ILS RWY 24. ABOUT 4 MI N OF LAX AND 7 MI E OF LAX, WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 220 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE RWY 24R LOC. FO OVERSHOT THE LOC AND DID NOT USE A 30 DEG BANK STANDARD RATE TURN FROM 070 DEG HDG TO 220 DEG HDG. I HAD TO TAKE CTL OF ACFT AND USE A 45 DEG BANK TO R TO GET BACK ON A HEADING FOR RWY 24R. ATC TOLD US TO USE RWY 24L AND MOVED ANOTHER ACFT TO RWY 24R THAT WE CUT IN FRONT OF. FO LATER TOLD ME THAT WHEN HE WENT VISUAL, HE WAS LOOKING AT RWY 25R AND THOUGHT IT WAS RWY 24R. THE APCH/RWY LIGHT FOR THE RWYS 25 APPEAR TO BE BRIGHTER THAN THE RWYS 24. WE THEN LANDED THE ACFT ON RWY 24L WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE TCASII DID GIVE US A TA WARNING AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME I TOOK OVER CTL OF THE ACFT FROM THE IOE FO. WE LATER HAD A THOROUGH DEBRIEF ABOUT THE FLT AND APCH INTO LAX.
