Narrative:

Holding short of runway 5R at taxiway north, we were told by tower to cross runway 5R and hold short runway 5L, as there was a beech 1900 in position on runway 5L (and traffic had just landed on runway 5R). On the other side of runway 5R, between the runways on taxiway north, there are 2 sets of hold short lines (which I believe are depicted poorly) that do not allow any aircraft to physically clear runway 5R while holding short of runway 5L. We noticed that we had crossed the runway 5L hold short, and that the runway 5R hold short was the one in front of us after coming to a stop and setting the parking brake. The 1900 took off, we got position and hold, and everything worked out fine. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter said that, while the narrative of his report says the hold short lines in question '...are depicted poorly,' a more accurate statement would be to say that the lines are depicted correctly but confusingly. Reporter also says that he feels the new commercial chart 10-9 chart helps clarify what is still counter-intuitive. The runway hold short lines leave an aircraft with its tail still on the other runway.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: ACR CREW CROSSED HOLD SHORT LINE OF ACTIVE RWY.

Narrative: HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 5R AT TXWY N, WE WERE TOLD BY TWR TO CROSS RWY 5R AND HOLD SHORT RWY 5L, AS THERE WAS A BEECH 1900 IN POS ON RWY 5L (AND TFC HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 5R). ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 5R, BTWN THE RWYS ON TXWY N, THERE ARE 2 SETS OF HOLD SHORT LINES (WHICH I BELIEVE ARE DEPICTED POORLY) THAT DO NOT ALLOW ANY ACFT TO PHYSICALLY CLR RWY 5R WHILE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 5L. WE NOTICED THAT WE HAD CROSSED THE RWY 5L HOLD SHORT, AND THAT THE RWY 5R HOLD SHORT WAS THE ONE IN FRONT OF US AFTER COMING TO A STOP AND SETTING THE PARKING BRAKE. THE 1900 TOOK OFF, WE GOT POS AND HOLD, AND EVERYTHING WORKED OUT FINE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR SAID THAT, WHILE THE NARRATIVE OF HIS RPT SAYS THE HOLD SHORT LINES IN QUESTION '...ARE DEPICTED POORLY,' A MORE ACCURATE STATEMENT WOULD BE TO SAY THAT THE LINES ARE DEPICTED CORRECTLY BUT CONFUSINGLY. RPTR ALSO SAYS THAT HE FEELS THE NEW COMMERCIAL CHART 10-9 CHART HELPS CLARIFY WHAT IS STILL COUNTER-INTUITIVE. THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINES LEAVE AN ACFT WITH ITS TAIL STILL ON THE OTHER RWY.
