Narrative:

The first officer responded to ATC with a clearance to climb. He placed 8000 ft in altitude alerter and it was verified by myself. While passing through 6500 ft ATC questioned our altitude. At that point ATC responded that our clearance was for 5000 ft and to maintain 7000 ft. No conflict was reported. While on the departure frequency I was aware of ATC not using complete call signs while talking to aircraft. In our case, ATC was not using our call sign at all times, only using our flight number. This can create a lot of confusion.
