Narrative:

Pilot and passenger were landing at stk following a VFR cross country flight from apa. Unicom reported winds from 240 degrees at 2 KTS. I elected to land on runway 33. During the high speed portion of the landing roll, the aircraft started to veer off track several times, and was straightened successfully using rudder/tailwheel steering. The aircraft then tracked smoothly as it decelerated to approximately 30 KTS (estimated), at which time it suddenly veered left and failed to respond adequately to right rudder and brake. The aircraft went off the side of the runway at approximately midfield, and came to rest on its nose in soft earth. Neither the pilot nor the passenger were injured, and the egress was uneventful. The only obvious damage was to the wood propeller, wheel pants, the spinner, and fabric scrapes of the right aileron and wingtip. Subsequent inspection revealed a slight wrinkle in the fabric of the upper left wing. Because of this possible indication of structural damage, the FSDO was notified (via denver AFSS) on that date.

Title: A PITTS S2B DEPARTED THE RWY AT STK ON LNDG. THE PLT RPTED THAT THE ACFT FAILED TO RESPOND TO FULL R RUDDER AND BRAKE.

Narrative: PLT AND PAX WERE LNDG AT STK FOLLOWING A VFR XCOUNTRY FLT FROM APA. UNICOM RPTED WINDS FROM 240 DEGS AT 2 KTS. I ELECTED TO LAND ON RWY 33. DURING THE HIGH SPD PORTION OF THE LNDG ROLL, THE ACFT STARTED TO VEER OFF TRACK SEVERAL TIMES, AND WAS STRAIGHTENED SUCCESSFULLY USING RUDDER/TAILWHEEL STEERING. THE ACFT THEN TRACKED SMOOTHLY AS IT DECELERATED TO APPROX 30 KTS (ESTIMATED), AT WHICH TIME IT SUDDENLY VEERED L AND FAILED TO RESPOND ADEQUATELY TO R RUDDER AND BRAKE. THE ACFT WENT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY AT APPROX MIDFIELD, AND CAME TO REST ON ITS NOSE IN SOFT EARTH. NEITHER THE PLT NOR THE PAX WERE INJURED, AND THE EGRESS WAS UNEVENTFUL. THE ONLY OBVIOUS DAMAGE WAS TO THE WOOD PROP, WHEEL PANTS, THE SPINNER, AND FABRIC SCRAPES OF THE R AILERON AND WINGTIP.
