Narrative:

I was the PF with autoplt engaged. TCASII sounded 'traffic, traffic.' we noticed co-altitude traffic at 11 O'clock, approximately 10 mi. ATC then told us to turn to 270 degrees (from 220 degrees) and 'descend immediately to FL230.' we heard ZID tell the other aircraft to 'climb immediately to FL330.' my first officer said the closest range to the target was 2 1/2 mi and 200 ft vertical. An near midair collision report was filed with ZID after completion of the flight. ZID quality control telephoned me at home later that day and informed me a controller error had occurred.
