Narrative:

After deviating around thundershowers for 20 mins with heavy rain and lightning, I saw an opening on the radar and asked for the VOR 5 approach at cre. The controller said he would set me up for that, and started giving me headings. The radios were very static sounding and it was hard to hear. I then heard him say cleared the approach and proceeded to fly the full approach, when the controller had actually said cleared the straight-in approach. After overflying the VOR for the full approach, the controller asked where I was going. I told him to intercept the outbound radial for the full approach. He then stated I had been cleared the straight-in. He then cleared me for the full approach. Factors: static on radios, storm, lightning, and loud rain made it hard to hear controller, plus controller was working several different radio frequencys and went unanswered when I tried to call him back.

Title: A CPR JET PIC STARTS TO MAKE A FULL VOR RWY 5 APCH AT CRE, SC, WHEN THE CTLR HAD CLRED HIM FOR A STRAIGHT IN APCH.

Narrative: AFTER DEVIATING AROUND THUNDERSHOWERS FOR 20 MINS WITH HVY RAIN AND LIGHTNING, I SAW AN OPENING ON THE RADAR AND ASKED FOR THE VOR 5 APCH AT CRE. THE CTLR SAID HE WOULD SET ME UP FOR THAT, AND STARTED GIVING ME HDGS. THE RADIOS WERE VERY STATIC SOUNDING AND IT WAS HARD TO HEAR. I THEN HEARD HIM SAY CLRED THE APCH AND PROCEEDED TO FLY THE FULL APCH, WHEN THE CTLR HAD ACTUALLY SAID CLRED THE STRAIGHT-IN APCH. AFTER OVERFLYING THE VOR FOR THE FULL APCH, THE CTLR ASKED WHERE I WAS GOING. I TOLD HIM TO INTERCEPT THE OUTBOUND RADIAL FOR THE FULL APCH. HE THEN STATED I HAD BEEN CLRED THE STRAIGHT-IN. HE THEN CLRED ME FOR THE FULL APCH. FACTORS: STATIC ON RADIOS, STORM, LIGHTNING, AND LOUD RAIN MADE IT HARD TO HEAR CTLR, PLUS CTLR WAS WORKING SEVERAL DIFFERENT RADIO FREQS AND WENT UNANSWERED WHEN I TRIED TO CALL HIM BACK.
