Narrative:

Approaching runway 18L at mco, the tower cleared our flight into position and hold. We began a quick recap of our takeoff/departure brief and ran our before takeoff check (required prior to active runway). During that time the tower told us of an aircraft on 5 mi final and told that aircraft that we were on the runway. At that time we began our takeoff roll. Once airborne tower told us to fly runway heading and that we were given position and hold instructions. Both the captain and myself had the mind set to begin roll after receiving the traffic on final report from tower. The TA given by the tower is a normal call but, in this particular scenario led us to think we had been given takeoff clearance. There were no traffic conflicts due to this miscom. I also believe that the captain and myself were still thinking about a few maintenance problems we encountered on pushback and engine start. The remainder of the flight was uneventful. The main concern in this event was that another turbojet aircraft was on a 4 or 5 mi final for the runway we were on, somewhat putting our mind set in the go mode. The following day, I heard a tower controller state to another aircraft cleared to position and hold, followed a few mins later by, 'you have traffic on a 4 mi final, you are still cleared into position and hold.' I think that call may help pilots keep their position and hold clearance in their mind set. Supplemental information from acn 431971: we had traffic in sight at 1 O'clock (that traffic had been the reason we were not cleared for takeoff).

Title: AN ACR JET PERFORMS AN UNAUTH TKOF AT MCO, FL.

Narrative: APCHING RWY 18L AT MCO, THE TWR CLRED OUR FLT INTO POS AND HOLD. WE BEGAN A QUICK RECAP OF OUR TKOF/DEP BRIEF AND RAN OUR BEFORE TKOF CHK (REQUIRED PRIOR TO ACTIVE RWY). DURING THAT TIME THE TWR TOLD US OF AN ACFT ON 5 MI FINAL AND TOLD THAT ACFT THAT WE WERE ON THE RWY. AT THAT TIME WE BEGAN OUR TKOF ROLL. ONCE AIRBORNE TWR TOLD US TO FLY RWY HDG AND THAT WE WERE GIVEN POS AND HOLD INSTRUCTIONS. BOTH THE CAPT AND MYSELF HAD THE MIND SET TO BEGIN ROLL AFTER RECEIVING THE TFC ON FINAL RPT FROM TWR. THE TA GIVEN BY THE TWR IS A NORMAL CALL BUT, IN THIS PARTICULAR SCENARIO LED US TO THINK WE HAD BEEN GIVEN TKOF CLRNC. THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS DUE TO THIS MISCOM. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE CAPT AND MYSELF WERE STILL THINKING ABOUT A FEW MAINT PROBS WE ENCOUNTERED ON PUSHBACK AND ENG START. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. THE MAIN CONCERN IN THIS EVENT WAS THAT ANOTHER TURBOJET ACFT WAS ON A 4 OR 5 MI FINAL FOR THE RWY WE WERE ON, SOMEWHAT PUTTING OUR MIND SET IN THE GO MODE. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I HEARD A TWR CTLR STATE TO ANOTHER ACFT CLRED TO POS AND HOLD, FOLLOWED A FEW MINS LATER BY, 'YOU HAVE TFC ON A 4 MI FINAL, YOU ARE STILL CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD.' I THINK THAT CALL MAY HELP PLTS KEEP THEIR POS AND HOLD CLRNC IN THEIR MIND SET. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 431971: WE HAD TFC IN SIGHT AT 1 O'CLOCK (THAT TFC HAD BEEN THE REASON WE WERE NOT CLRED FOR TKOF).
