Altitude: 17000 ft. ATC facility: ZBW. Location: about 25 mi west of boston. Climbing out of boston at about 17000 ft, EICAS message of left hydraulic quantity displayed. Went through procedure, returned to boston, and declared an emergency. Used alternate flap and gear procedures for an overweight landing of 212000 pounds. Touchdown was normal and had to be towed back to the gate.
