Narrative:

Had climbed out to FL230, then FL270, then cleared to FL310. Told to turn left to 330 degrees, then 315 degrees, then 290 degrees, then 270 degrees. Asked to expedite climb at FL293 for FL310. Controller thought he had cleared us to FL330. Altitude alerter confirmed our clearance limit of FL310. Autoplt was inoperative. I was hand flying aircraft and had flown with this same copilot and flight engineer on numerous occasions. The controller became 'snarly' and told us he had cleared us to FL330 3 times. Our company uses 'finger point' procedure for altitude alerter and no clearance was received or read back. Controller seems to need relaxation therapy.

Title: FLC OF A B727 UNDERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT ON CLB DUE TO NOT HEARING THE FINAL ASSIGNED ALT FROM THE ARTCC CTLR.

Narrative: HAD CLBED OUT TO FL230, THEN FL270, THEN CLRED TO FL310. TOLD TO TURN L TO 330 DEGS, THEN 315 DEGS, THEN 290 DEGS, THEN 270 DEGS. ASKED TO EXPEDITE CLB AT FL293 FOR FL310. CTLR THOUGHT HE HAD CLRED US TO FL330. ALT ALERTER CONFIRMED OUR CLRNC LIMIT OF FL310. AUTOPLT WAS INOP. I WAS HAND FLYING ACFT AND HAD FLOWN WITH THIS SAME COPLT AND FE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE CTLR BECAME 'SNARLY' AND TOLD US HE HAD CLRED US TO FL330 3 TIMES. OUR COMPANY USES 'FINGER POINT' PROC FOR ALT ALERTER AND NO CLRNC WAS RECEIVED OR READ BACK. CTLR SEEMS TO NEED RELAXATION THERAPY.
