Narrative:

In sum: IFR flight plan filed mlb to lal. VFR conditions. Pilot and 1 passenger (friend) asking questions during preflight and taxi out. During taxi, several radio xmissions occurred, some of which were directed at reporter. These instructions were not fully heard and not completely understood and no attempt was made to clarify same. One of the misunderstood clrncs was to watch for a particular aircraft. The reporter assumed said aircraft was airborne and that he had apparently missed the takeoff clearance and so began his takeoff roll. During the takeoff roll, reporter noticed aircraft on the runway. Shortly thereafter, mlb tower notified the reporter that he had taken off without a clearance.
