Narrative:

After completing pre taxi check, I (aircraft X) called bhm tower for taxi instructions. Tower (local) was handling both ground and local frequencys. The clearance was, 'aircraft #1, taxi to runway 5.' I read back the clearance. The captain read it back to me, and began to taxi. This clearance gave us clearance to cross all txwys and runways on the way to runway 5. We would cross runway 36 on the way to runway 5. Reaching the intersection of runway 36 and taxiway F, I made the company call (clear on the right,' and the captain looked left and called 'clear on the left' and started across runway 18/36. As we were clearing the runway, I heard the call, 'north-number, going around.' I looked out my side window toward my 4:30 - 5:00 O'clock position and saw a turbo commander (aircraft Y) going around. It was then I realized the commander was going around because of us crossing runway 36. The commander pilot asked the tower, 'does anyone know why that falcon crossed the runway?' the tower's response was, 'still trying to figure this out, we thought he was coming off the east ramp.' nothing more was said. The captain and I discussed this over lunch and decided to call the bhm tower to try to determine what had happened. After a little investigation, the tower determined that there was a 'trainee' on duty being supervised by an instructor. At the same time there was a crew change taking place in the tower. It seems that someone forgot to tell the new crew about the commander on final approach and our clearance to taxi to runway 5. I believe several things contributed to this near miss on the runway. First, a trainee should not be working several frequencys -- especially during a busy period on the airport. Second, we as a crew should have verified our clearance to cross all txwys and runways. Third, the commander pilot should have spoke up as soon as he realized we were going to cross the runway. There was no accident, but there could have been. I think we all dropped the ball and could have done better. I know that I will always verify before crossing a runway again.

I READ BACK THE CLRNC. THE CAPT READ IT BACK TO ME, AND BEGAN TO TAXI. THIS CLRNC GAVE US CLRNC TO CROSS ALL TXWYS AND RWYS ON THE WAY TO RWY 5. WE WOULD CROSS RWY 36 ON THE WAY TO RWY 5. REACHING THE INTXN OF RWY 36 AND TXWY F, I MADE THE COMPANY CALL (CLR ON THE R,' AND THE CAPT LOOKED L AND CALLED 'CLR ON THE L' AND STARTED ACROSS RWY 18/36. IT WAS THEN I REALIZED THE COMMANDER WAS GOING AROUND BECAUSE OF US XING RWY 36. THE COMMANDER PLT ASKED THE TWR, 'DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THAT FALCON CROSSED THE RWY?' THE TWR'S RESPONSE WAS, 'STILL TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT, WE THOUGHT HE WAS COMING OFF THE E RAMP.' NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. THE CAPT AND I DISCUSSED THIS OVER LUNCH AND DECIDED TO CALL THE BHM TWR TO TRY TO DETERMINE WHAT HAD HAPPENED. AFTER A LITTLE INVESTIGATION, THE TWR DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS A 'TRAINEE' ON DUTY BEING SUPERVISED BY AN INSTRUCTOR. AT THE SAME TIME THERE WAS A CREW CHANGE TAKING PLACE IN THE TWR. IT SEEMS THAT SOMEONE FORGOT TO TELL THE NEW CREW ABOUT THE COMMANDER ON FINAL APCH AND OUR CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 5. I BELIEVE SEVERAL THINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS NEAR MISS ON THE RWY. FIRST, A TRAINEE SHOULD NOT BE WORKING SEVERAL FREQS -- ESPECIALLY DURING A BUSY PERIOD ON THE ARPT. SECOND, WE AS A CREW SHOULD HAVE VERIFIED OUR CLRNC TO CROSS ALL TXWYS AND RWYS. THIRD, THE COMMANDER PLT SHOULD HAVE SPOKE UP AS SOON AS HE REALIZED WE WERE GOING TO CROSS THE RWY. THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, BUT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN. I THINK WE ALL DROPPED THE BALL AND COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. I KNOW THAT I WILL ALWAYS VERIFY BEFORE XING A RWY AGAIN.
