Narrative:

At the time of incident we were departing pdk airport on an IFR flight plan to fty, only 12 mi from pdk. We expected vectors to ILS runway 8. The final approach course is 10 mi west of fty. Immediately after departure, we were given vector to the final approach course of VOR DME a runway 26 without benefit of advance notice or of navigating to the initial approach fix. While locating the approach plate, we flew the final approach course. ATC requested that we execute a missed approach. We climbed to 4000 ft and were vectored back to the final approach course. On this second attempt we intercepted the final approach course and flew the approach to a full stop without incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated the purpose of the flight was for instrument instruction. Immediately after takeoff, atl approach began vectors for the approach. Due to the close proximity of the takeoff point there was insufficient time to pick up the ATIS and were unprepared for the approach in use.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DEP, WE WERE GIVEN VECTOR TO THE FINAL APCH COURSE OF VOR DME A RWY 26 WITHOUT BENEFIT OF ADVANCE NOTICE OR OF NAVING TO THE INITIAL APCH FIX. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THE PURPOSE OF THE FLT WAS FOR INST INSTRUCTION. IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF, ATL APCH BEGAN VECTORS FOR THE APCH. DUE TO THE CLOSE PROX OF THE TKOF POINT THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT TIME TO PICK UP THE ATIS AND WERE UNPREPARED FOR THE APCH IN USE.
