Narrative:

Due to the early departure time from avra valley, the first radio contact I made was to approach control at phx. At that time I found that my radios were not working properly. As a result, I may have missed ATC directions. When I discovered the problem, I asked clearance to return back to avra valley several times before clearance was given. Upon my return to the airport, I reported the problems. No injuries or aircraft damage.
