Narrative:

Altitude deviation. Cleared to 8000 ft on hornet 1 departure. On 300 degree heading to intercept clt 270 degree radial to haray. FMC had dropped clt/haray and first officer was re-entering. I was manually selecting VOR to confirm radial. Atl now clears us to atl, so more FMC work. I had my head down and should not have. Saw 8300 ft and reduced power and began return to 8000 ft. Atl now clears us to 12000 ft then asks our previous altitude clearance. We stated 8000 ft and atl said showed us at 8300 ft which we acknowledged. Still cleared to 12000 ft and continued. No further discussion by atl except a transponder altitude check when handed off at 9500 ft.
