Narrative:
PNF was off of the ATC frequency listening to ATIS as was the acm. Altitude assignment of 8000 ft was given to me along with a frequency change. After frequency change, I heard ATC tell me 'give me a good rate through 10000 ft.' at 9300 ft ATC said 'verify you are maintaining 10000 ft.' ATC then stated that 10000 ft was the assigned altitude. I immediately climbed to 10000 ft. Separation was never lost. I would have verified the assignment if I had any doubt but I thought that I had heard the instruction as stated above. Also, there was no question from the controller, after my repeat back, that I was descending to 8000 ft.
