Narrative:

On climb out from ewr, first officer was flying. Captain was calling in times to company. Center cleared aircraft to intercept the 252 degree radial from sparta to elliot intersection and to climb to 17000 ft. First officer read back clearance and altitude of FL180. Shortly after that, the #2 pack overheated and faulted. The captain performed the ECAM actions while the first officer intercepted the 252 degree radial and continued the climb to FL180. Climbing through 17600 ft, center advised us the clearance was to 17000 ft. First officer immediately stopped the climb and returned to 17000 ft.

FO READ BACK CLRNC AND ALT OF FL180. SHORTLY AFTER THAT, THE #2 PACK OVERHEATED AND FAULTED. THE CAPT PERFORMED THE ECAM ACTIONS WHILE THE FO INTERCEPTED THE 252 DEG RADIAL AND CONTINUED THE CLB TO FL180. CLBING THROUGH 17600 FT, CTR ADVISED US THE CLRNC WAS TO 17000 FT. FO IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE CLB AND RETURNED TO 17000 FT.
