Yaw damper problem written up in ZZZ. Yaw rate gyro was replaced by contract maintenance in ZZZ. Yaw rate gyro is a CAT ii item. The contract maintenance mechanic performed the incorrect CAT ii minimum test. He documented T30 test set used in the CAT ii test. By maintenance manual 22-00-2 page, no T30 test set is required. The CAT ii test was incorrect. The mechanic was not CAT ii qualified. The aircraft was not downgraded.
