Narrative:

Upon completion of line check of air carrier DC9-30 aircraft xyz, I entered the lower east&east compartment to troubleshoot an external power MEL reference log page xzyz. I left the door open expecting to come back to change parts. After several hours troubleshooting, I discovered it worked ok and didn't need parts. But I forgot the door was open. The flight crew took off that morning and could not pressurize the aircraft. Declared an emergency, landed, and returned to the gate. There were no personal injuries or aircraft damage. The crew then discovered the door open and the light in cockpit was inoperative. The switch was placed on MEL by ZZZ mechanic and the aircraft was returned to service with no further delay. Due to the heavy workload and lack of manpwr, I didn't doublechk my work, which resulted in this incident.
