Narrative:

Requested 4500 ft, was given 4000 ft. Kept climbing to 4500 ft, reported level 4500 ft. Mode C was inoperative. Telephone call to departure controller requested. After landing, was told of evasive action by beech 18 'I believe' was behind me -- never saw it. I busted altitude assigned -- inattn? Complacency? Keep using knee pad and copy clearance even on short VFR flight. Will do so from now on, as if on IFR.
