Narrative:

First officer obtained clearance while I was dealing with passenger. Clearance was 'capitol 4 departure for radar vectors to aml 091 degree radial paleo, af, maintain 3000 ft.' first officer was flying from left seat. When I sat down in the right seat, I got out the capitol 4 departure, read it out loud, and set 4000 ft in the altitude selector. The first officer didn't point out clearance was to 3000 ft rather than 4000 ft as published. We climbed to 4000 ft before the error was caught by departure control. Suggestions: better communication between captain and first officer. Less use of assigned altitudes different from published. ATC alert for error when aircraft checks in 'climbing to....' I checked in 'out of 1500 ft for 4000 ft.' if departure had caught error on initial call up, we could have still leveled at 3000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 416939: captain didn't fully read the clearance I'd copied down.

Title: FLC OF A TURBOPROP GULFSTREAM G159 OVERSHOT INITIAL DEP ALT DURING CLB RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENING AND REMINDING THEM OF ASSIGNED. THE FO FLYING THE ACFT IMMEDIATELY RETURNED THE ACFT TO THE LOWER ALT. FO BELIEVES THAT THE CAPT DID NOT FULLY READ THE DEP CLRNC COPIED BY HIM PRIOR TO TKOF.

Narrative: FO OBTAINED CLRNC WHILE I WAS DEALING WITH PAX. CLRNC WAS 'CAPITOL 4 DEP FOR RADAR VECTORS TO AML 091 DEG RADIAL PALEO, AF, MAINTAIN 3000 FT.' FO WAS FLYING FROM L SEAT. WHEN I SAT DOWN IN THE R SEAT, I GOT OUT THE CAPITOL 4 DEP, READ IT OUT LOUD, AND SET 4000 FT IN THE ALT SELECTOR. THE FO DIDN'T POINT OUT CLRNC WAS TO 3000 FT RATHER THAN 4000 FT AS PUBLISHED. WE CLBED TO 4000 FT BEFORE THE ERROR WAS CAUGHT BY DEP CTL. SUGGESTIONS: BETTER COM BTWN CAPT AND FO. LESS USE OF ASSIGNED ALTS DIFFERENT FROM PUBLISHED. ATC ALERT FOR ERROR WHEN ACFT CHKS IN 'CLBING TO....' I CHKED IN 'OUT OF 1500 FT FOR 4000 FT.' IF DEP HAD CAUGHT ERROR ON INITIAL CALL UP, WE COULD HAVE STILL LEVELED AT 3000 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 416939: CAPT DIDN'T FULLY READ THE CLRNC I'D COPIED DOWN.
