Narrative:

Flaps 8 degrees required for takeoff. First officer had set 11 degrees. Informed him during taxi out and he reset using dial-a- flap. Responding to speed brake callout on before checklist, momentarily moved throttles and no aural warnings. Flaps were set 8/8/8 for takeoff. At 90 KTS on to roll, flaps warning sounded. Aborted takeoff. During taxi back noticed flaps indicated 6 degrees. On checking flap handle, found that handle not in detent. Reviewed procedures with new first officer and reset flaps after returning flaps to 0 degrees.

Title: CAPT OF A SUPER MD80 ABORTED TKOF WHEN THE WING FLAP WARNING SOUNDED DURING TKOF ROLL. FLC DISCOVERED THAT THE FLAP HANDLE WAS NOT IN ITS DETENT AND THE SETTING WAS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR TKOF.

DURING TAXI BACK NOTICED FLAPS INDICATED 6 DEGS. ON CHKING FLAP HANDLE, FOUND THAT HANDLE NOT IN DETENT. REVIEWED PROCS WITH NEW FO AND RESET FLAPS AFTER RETURNING FLAPS TO 0 DEGS.
