Narrative:

Events occurred at kent (1g3) sep/xa/98. Duats: WX checked between XX30 and YY00 reported wind out of the southwest at 10 KTS. The remainder of the briefing was acceptable for the plan of takeoff and landing practice. Preflight: prior to preflight a check of the wind at kent indicated wind was southwest at 5-6 KTS. The remainder of preflight was uneventful. Run-up: during taxi and run-up, unicom reported winds southwest at 8 KTS. Run-up was uneventful. Takeoff: runway 19 was active at that time. Time was about XA00. During the takeoff roll the wind sock midfield was full open at a crosswind but the south sock was less full. Takeoff went ok with aileron input. Crosswind leg: seemed to go quick but pattern altitude was achieved prior to downwind. Downwind leg: a fair amount of crab was needed on downwind approximately 30 degrees. Moderate turbulence was also noted. Across from the second stripe power was reduced to 1500 RPM and 10 degrees of flaps were added and airspeed was about 80 KTS at this time. Base leg: after base turn 20 degrees of flaps were added and 70 KTS maintained. Final: no additional flaps were added on final and airspeed held to about 65 KTS (usual approach speed 60) in anticipation of a crosswind. The right wing was lowered to correct drift and left rudder applied to keep aligned with runway. Power was reduced to idle before flare. 65 KTS was held to flare. Touchdown was just left of center. Full right aileron was applied. The aircraft continued to drift left. Right rudder was applied but I felt that the right wing was lifting and I was concerned about flipping on the nosewheel and left main. About this time the left main was in the grass and shortly after a runway edge light was struck. The aircraft began rolling down a grade and brakes were applied before aircraft could be stopped a ditch was encountered. After the aircraft stopped I exited. Once outside I reached back in to shut off the master, fuel selector, and removed the key from the ignition. Crosswind measured at kent per the airport manager was 17 KTS.

Title: SMA PLT LOST CTL DURING LNDG, WENT OFF SIDE OF RWY AND HIT A RWY LIGHT THEN WENT INTO A DITCH.

Narrative: EVENTS OCCURRED AT KENT (1G3) SEP/XA/98. DUATS: WX CHKED BTWN XX30 AND YY00 RPTED WIND OUT OF THE SW AT 10 KTS. THE REMAINDER OF THE BRIEFING WAS ACCEPTABLE FOR THE PLAN OF TKOF AND LNDG PRACTICE. PREFLT: PRIOR TO PREFLT A CHK OF THE WIND AT KENT INDICATED WIND WAS SW AT 5-6 KTS. THE REMAINDER OF PREFLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. RUN-UP: DURING TAXI AND RUN-UP, UNICOM RPTED WINDS SW AT 8 KTS. RUN-UP WAS UNEVENTFUL. TKOF: RWY 19 WAS ACTIVE AT THAT TIME. TIME WAS ABOUT XA00. DURING THE TKOF ROLL THE WIND SOCK MIDFIELD WAS FULL OPEN AT A XWIND BUT THE S SOCK WAS LESS FULL. TKOF WENT OK WITH AILERON INPUT. XWIND LEG: SEEMED TO GO QUICK BUT PATTERN ALT WAS ACHIEVED PRIOR TO DOWNWIND. DOWNWIND LEG: A FAIR AMOUNT OF CRAB WAS NEEDED ON DOWNWIND APPROX 30 DEGS. MODERATE TURB WAS ALSO NOTED. ACROSS FROM THE SECOND STRIPE PWR WAS REDUCED TO 1500 RPM AND 10 DEGS OF FLAPS WERE ADDED AND AIRSPD WAS ABOUT 80 KTS AT THIS TIME. BASE LEG: AFTER BASE TURN 20 DEGS OF FLAPS WERE ADDED AND 70 KTS MAINTAINED. FINAL: NO ADDITIONAL FLAPS WERE ADDED ON FINAL AND AIRSPD HELD TO ABOUT 65 KTS (USUAL APCH SPD 60) IN ANTICIPATION OF A XWIND. THE R WING WAS LOWERED TO CORRECT DRIFT AND L RUDDER APPLIED TO KEEP ALIGNED WITH RWY. PWR WAS REDUCED TO IDLE BEFORE FLARE. 65 KTS WAS HELD TO FLARE. TOUCHDOWN WAS JUST L OF CTR. FULL R AILERON WAS APPLIED. THE ACFT CONTINUED TO DRIFT L. R RUDDER WAS APPLIED BUT I FELT THAT THE R WING WAS LIFTING AND I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT FLIPPING ON THE NOSEWHEEL AND L MAIN. ABOUT THIS TIME THE L MAIN WAS IN THE GRASS AND SHORTLY AFTER A RWY EDGE LIGHT WAS STRUCK. THE ACFT BEGAN ROLLING DOWN A GRADE AND BRAKES WERE APPLIED BEFORE ACFT COULD BE STOPPED A DITCH WAS ENCOUNTERED. AFTER THE ACFT STOPPED I EXITED. ONCE OUTSIDE I REACHED BACK IN TO SHUT OFF THE MASTER, FUEL SELECTOR, AND REMOVED THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. XWIND MEASURED AT KENT PER THE ARPT MGR WAS 17 KTS.
