Narrative:

The ICAO type designator 'gulf' for all gulfstream aircraft G2 through G5 is an oversimplification. There is a marked difference in the performance of a G2 versus a G4 or G5. Knowledge of aircraft and their performance characteristics is a valuable tool to skilled air traffic controllers. Since we in the ctrs cannot look out the window and see the type, we have to ask the type. This is a nuisance and a waste of valuable radio time. I think more definitive designators would better serve ATC, rather than gulf. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: contacted reporter regarding the recent aircraft designator changes for the gulfstream and other types of aircraft. Reporter stated that he was not aware of the changes but was going to ask staff to locate a copy of the alert bulletin.
