Narrative:

While approaching killeen airport for a landing, we were held at 6000 ft MSL to clear an active restr area until approximately 5 mi from the field. The first officer, who had only been there 1 other time, was flying. Unaware that we would be brought in so high and close to the field before receiving our clearance, he was unprepared to enter an immediate base leg to final. Upon my suggestion, we entered an upwind over the killer airport to enter the pattern for landing. During this traffic pattern the downwind was extended too far and we apparently entered the corner of gray airfield's airspace (R6302A/B) while turning base. We were queried by ATC, once on the ground, as to why we made the traffic pattern which resulted in the airspace intrusion. Some contributing factors and possible solutions: I allowed the first officer too much discretion without adequate assistance at a field he had little experience with. Gray approach did not remind us of the active restr area, which could have influenced our choices during the approach. Neither of us referenced the restr area on the charts.

Title: AN EMB120 FLC ENTERS THE 6302A RESTR AREA N OF ILE, TX, WHILE ON AN EXTENDED DOWNWIND LEG AT NIGHT AT AN UNCTLED ARPT. GRK MIL APCH CTLR ASKS THE CREW WHY THEY DID THAT.

Narrative: WHILE APCHING KILLEEN ARPT FOR A LNDG, WE WERE HELD AT 6000 FT MSL TO CLR AN ACTIVE RESTR AREA UNTIL APPROX 5 MI FROM THE FIELD. THE FO, WHO HAD ONLY BEEN THERE 1 OTHER TIME, WAS FLYING. UNAWARE THAT WE WOULD BE BROUGHT IN SO HIGH AND CLOSE TO THE FIELD BEFORE RECEIVING OUR CLRNC, HE WAS UNPREPARED TO ENTER AN IMMEDIATE BASE LEG TO FINAL. UPON MY SUGGESTION, WE ENTERED AN UPWIND OVER THE KILLER ARPT TO ENTER THE PATTERN FOR LNDG. DURING THIS TFC PATTERN THE DOWNWIND WAS EXTENDED TOO FAR AND WE APPARENTLY ENTERED THE CORNER OF GRAY AIRFIELD'S AIRSPACE (R6302A/B) WHILE TURNING BASE. WE WERE QUERIED BY ATC, ONCE ON THE GND, AS TO WHY WE MADE THE TFC PATTERN WHICH RESULTED IN THE AIRSPACE INTRUSION. SOME CONTRIBUTING FACTORS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: I ALLOWED THE FO TOO MUCH DISCRETION WITHOUT ADEQUATE ASSISTANCE AT A FIELD HE HAD LITTLE EXPERIENCE WITH. GRAY APCH DID NOT REMIND US OF THE ACTIVE RESTR AREA, WHICH COULD HAVE INFLUENCED OUR CHOICES DURING THE APCH. NEITHER OF US REFED THE RESTR AREA ON THE CHARTS.
