Narrative:

Cleared to taxi from the terminal to runway 23 via txwys T, north, M, a, hold short of runway 34. I read back the clearance to ground but do not remember the captain acknowledging the hold short clearance. As we taxied I was running the checklist and had looked inside at the FMS to double-check our outbound course, when I looked back outside we were coming up on runway 34. I saw the hold short line out of my peripheral vision and registered that we had crossed the line without clearance. We were still quite a distance from the runway edge. As I was telling the captain to hold short, ground control cleared us to 'cross runway 34 without delay, traffic on a mi and a half final.' we crossed without incident. A contributing factor was our unfamiliarity with the field and the fact that we were following an aircraft from another air carrier who was cleared to the same runway. Another factor was the distance from the hold short line to the runway's edge. As I was performing duties inside the cockpit, the hold line failed to register on my subconscious because I didn't realize we were at runway 34 yet. Corrective actions: get an acknowledgment of hold short clrncs from the captain, maintain situational awareness, which should have priority over running checklists, anticipate. Supplemental information from acn 407920: I failed to hear the hold short instruction. Fortunately the first officer caught it and called it. We did stop short without any effort but did cross the hold short markings. Need to pay closer attention to all instructions, not just the route of taxi.

Title: AN MD88 FLC TAXIES PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 34 AT PVD. GND CTLR SEES CONFLICT WITH ACFT ON SHORT FINAL AND CLRS THE MD88 ACROSS, POSTHASTE.

Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI FROM THE TERMINAL TO RWY 23 VIA TXWYS T, N, M, A, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 34. I READ BACK THE CLRNC TO GND BUT DO NOT REMEMBER THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGING THE HOLD SHORT CLRNC. AS WE TAXIED I WAS RUNNING THE CHKLIST AND HAD LOOKED INSIDE AT THE FMS TO DOUBLE-CHK OUR OUTBOUND COURSE, WHEN I LOOKED BACK OUTSIDE WE WERE COMING UP ON RWY 34. I SAW THE HOLD SHORT LINE OUT OF MY PERIPHERAL VISION AND REGISTERED THAT WE HAD CROSSED THE LINE WITHOUT CLRNC. WE WERE STILL QUITE A DISTANCE FROM THE RWY EDGE. AS I WAS TELLING THE CAPT TO HOLD SHORT, GND CTL CLRED US TO 'CROSS RWY 34 WITHOUT DELAY, TFC ON A MI AND A HALF FINAL.' WE CROSSED WITHOUT INCIDENT. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS OUR UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE FIELD AND THE FACT THAT WE WERE FOLLOWING AN ACFT FROM ANOTHER ACR WHO WAS CLRED TO THE SAME RWY. ANOTHER FACTOR WAS THE DISTANCE FROM THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO THE RWY'S EDGE. AS I WAS PERFORMING DUTIES INSIDE THE COCKPIT, THE HOLD LINE FAILED TO REGISTER ON MY SUBCONSCIOUS BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALIZE WE WERE AT RWY 34 YET. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: GET AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF HOLD SHORT CLRNCS FROM THE CAPT, MAINTAIN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, WHICH SHOULD HAVE PRIORITY OVER RUNNING CHKLISTS, ANTICIPATE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 407920: I FAILED TO HEAR THE HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION. FORTUNATELY THE FO CAUGHT IT AND CALLED IT. WE DID STOP SHORT WITHOUT ANY EFFORT BUT DID CROSS THE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS. NEED TO PAY CLOSER ATTN TO ALL INSTRUCTIONS, NOT JUST THE RTE OF TAXI.
