Narrative:

Sunday morning we filed a VFR flight plan at the FSS at yqk, ontario, canada. As we understood it, the flight plan covered 'the trip' to fairbanks. Because we stopped overnight at yqh, we called yqk FSS from the motel and checked WX and continued our flight the next day. The next morning, we called ort, ak, by phone and left a message on the answering machine for customs that we would arrive at XY20. We called FSS by radio and rechked WX. He asked if we needed him to open our flight plan. We responded 'no.' (we believed it was already activated automatically, as was done at saskatoon and dawson creek.) apparently, our flight plan was either never entered or opened because we were visited by FAA on arrival at fai. I still don't understand the canadian system, or what went wrong. I assume the FAA people will find out. I'm anxious to know.
