Narrative:

Climbing to assigned 9000 ft, I looked away momentarily then realized the altitude select did not capture the assigned altitude. We were at 9500 ft and immediately returned to assigned altitude. Diversion of attention at the wrong time as well as expecting autoplt to always do what you expect leads to errors.

Title: DURING CLB PLT DEVIATED 500 FT ABOVE ALT ASSIGNED BECAUSE HE DID NOT NOTICE HIS ALT SELECT DID NOT CAPTURE.

Narrative: CLBING TO ASSIGNED 9000 FT, I LOOKED AWAY MOMENTARILY THEN REALIZED THE ALT SELECT DID NOT CAPTURE THE ASSIGNED ALT. WE WERE AT 9500 FT AND IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO ASSIGNED ALT. DIVERSION OF ATTN AT THE WRONG TIME AS WELL AS EXPECTING AUTOPLT TO ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU EXPECT LEADS TO ERRORS.
