Narrative:

I was cleared to taxi to runway 31L via runway 5L then the taxiway. Well, I went through the taxiway and before I realized it I was on the runway 31L. Ground said 'stop,' then I saw the other aircraft braking down runway 31L (not even close), 1000-2000 ft away. I remember thinking that there were parallel txwys even though I saw the runway sign. In my mind, that seemed to be the taxiway I thought I should have taken. Since I was taxiing on a runway there were no hold bars that I remember seeing. I should have studied airport diagram better, stopped before going by a red runway sign, told ground control unfamiliar/progressive taxi instructions please. Ground control might have paid closer attention. Shouldn't have stayed up late arguing with my wife. Although I felt rested, my concentration probably suffered. I feel thankful no one was hurt, ashamed, humbled, and punished enough. I pray that I won't lose my job.
