Narrative:

At FL310 deviating south of direct lit, ZKC switches us to 125.3 and clears us to FL350. We switch and start climb. Unable to check in on 125.4, we go back to original frequency, 134.00. He told us to stop climb about FL325, and then cleared us to FL330, then told us there was a problem.
