Narrative:

On the may/xa/98 at XA30, after receiving clearance from ground control, pushback commenced. We were pushed by a ground crew into an alley between terminals. The captain was on the interphone to the pushback ground crew as I communicated with the ground control. ATC cleared inbound company traffic into the gate we had just vacated. Then ATC told us that traffic was taxiing into our gate. I relayed that message to the captain and I heard him remark that he didn't think there was enough room for that aircraft to taxi in to the gate. At about that same time, the aircraft moved forward to what I believed was 1 or 2 ft and ran over a towbar. I did not see the captain release the brakes as I was talking to ATC and looking for inbound traffic.

Narrative: ON THE MAY/XA/98 AT XA30, AFTER RECEIVING CLRNC FROM GND CTL, PUSHBACK COMMENCED. WE WERE PUSHED BY A GND CREW INTO AN ALLEY BETWEEN TERMINALS. THE CAPT WAS ON THE INTERPHONE TO THE PUSHBACK GND CREW AS I COMMUNICATED WITH THE GND CTL. ATC CLRED INBOUND COMPANY TFC INTO THE GATE WE HAD JUST VACATED. THEN ATC TOLD US THAT TFC WAS TAXIING INTO OUR GATE. I RELAYED THAT MESSAGE TO THE CAPT AND I HEARD HIM REMARK THAT HE DIDN'T THINK THERE WAS ENOUGH ROOM FOR THAT ACFT TO TAXI IN TO THE GATE. AT ABOUT THAT SAME TIME, THE ACFT MOVED FORWARD TO WHAT I BELIEVED WAS 1 OR 2 FT AND RAN OVER A TOWBAR. I DID NOT SEE THE CAPT RELEASE THE BRAKES AS I WAS TALKING TO ATC AND LOOKING FOR INBOUND TFC.
