Narrative:

Cleared for departure runway 3, banyo 3, eagul, sjn, abq, then caf direct dtw. Cleared 5000 ft initially. Misread SID, interping 034 degree radial pxr direct to eagul. Departure contacted approximately 5000 ft MSL. Following handoff from tower, departure questioned procedure, noted altitude, cleared VFR, then climb, no terrain avoidance guaranteed, then on to flight plan route, IFR. Note: the SID, when viewed on government chart looks 'direct' 034 degree radial to eagul upon initial glance. It does not show limits as to how soon, or within what radius from sdl (runway 3) the turn to banyo must be made. Also, tower should send aircraft to departure more rapidly. Clearance should stipulate 'turn left, heading XXX to banyo, etc.'
