Narrative:

Arrived stl on runway 30R, exited runway 30R onto high speed taxiway P1. Taxied up to and held short of runway 30L on taxiway B. Waited for several mins for arrival and departure aircraft, then was given a clearance to 'expedite across runway 30L, angle right to ramp, taxi to gate.' as I crossed runway 30L onto taxiway B, I could not remember whether we were cleared onto the ramp or not and since the ground frequency was busy, I turned onto taxiway a (wbound). At this time I noticed another air carrier crossing runway 30L on taxiway east heading for taxiway a. I slowed and stopped short of taxiway east and he (the other air carrier aircraft) stopped short of taxiway a. A different voice on ground control told the other aircraft to hold short and instructed us to proceed left at taxiway east to ramp and then said our original clearance was to proceed onto ramp and to gate. It was a late night flight, last leg of the day, and I wasn't sure of the proper directions, so I chose the taxiway rather than enter a busy ramp without being sure.

Title: CAPT OF FK10 FAILED TO FOLLOW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO THE GATE RESULTING IN TWR INTERVENTION TO RERTE HIM TO THE GATE TO AVOID ANOTHER ACFT WAITING TO USE THE TXWY HE WAS OCCUPYING.

Narrative: ARRIVED STL ON RWY 30R, EXITED RWY 30R ONTO HIGH SPD TXWY P1. TAXIED UP TO AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 30L ON TXWY B. WAITED FOR SEVERAL MINS FOR ARR AND DEP ACFT, THEN WAS GIVEN A CLRNC TO 'EXPEDITE ACROSS RWY 30L, ANGLE R TO RAMP, TAXI TO GATE.' AS I CROSSED RWY 30L ONTO TXWY B, I COULD NOT REMEMBER WHETHER WE WERE CLRED ONTO THE RAMP OR NOT AND SINCE THE GND FREQ WAS BUSY, I TURNED ONTO TXWY A (WBOUND). AT THIS TIME I NOTICED ANOTHER ACR XING RWY 30L ON TXWY E HDG FOR TXWY A. I SLOWED AND STOPPED SHORT OF TXWY E AND HE (THE OTHER ACR ACFT) STOPPED SHORT OF TXWY A. A DIFFERENT VOICE ON GND CTL TOLD THE OTHER ACFT TO HOLD SHORT AND INSTRUCTED US TO PROCEED L AT TXWY E TO RAMP AND THEN SAID OUR ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS TO PROCEED ONTO RAMP AND TO GATE. IT WAS A LATE NIGHT FLT, LAST LEG OF THE DAY, AND I WASN'T SURE OF THE PROPER DIRECTIONS, SO I CHOSE THE TXWY RATHER THAN ENTER A BUSY RAMP WITHOUT BEING SURE.
